A New Partnership on Substance Misuse

"You must continue to gain expertise, but avoid thinking like an expert."

- Denis Waitley

We quite fancy ourselves as woodworkers, at Growth Rings. We also hold a strong commitment to the personal development of people who join us for training and employment. Our strength lays in creating an atmosphere to achieve a state of ‘flow’: “the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterised by complete absorption in what one does.” (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow Theory). Through the exploration of craftsmanship and the desire to do a great job, for its own sake; we can start to think on how this attitude can spill over from the workshop into other aspects of people’s lives. For example, time spent with Growth Rings requires cooperation based on more than good will; camaraderie and friendships are forged as part of the process.

We believe in sticking to what we’re good at and have great faith in our mantra that collaboration is the new competition. So, there are times when we call on experts in other fields; areas in which we aim to learn, develop and eventually gain expertise on our own team. One such field is the area of substance misuse and it is with great honour that we begin a partnership with Turning Point’s Medway Active Recovery Service, (MARS) alongside Operations Manager, Sophie Price and her team.

MARS is dedicated to showing there is a way out of drug and alcohol dependency and encouraging Medway service users to achieve their individual potential.
They look at the whole person and provide a structured and supportive route through treatment and beyond into abstinence and sustainable recovery. They offer ambition, hope and belief in improving service users’ lives through their active approach in providing individual treatment.

MARS offers a range of services to support the individual in achieving their treatment goals including:

  • A thorough whole person assessment that identifies any complex needs
  • A specialist medical team providing substitute prescribing options and community detox
  • Support to access inpatient and community detoxification and rehabilitation services
  • In house and pharmacy based needle exchanges across Medway
  • An innovative and exciting Recovery Community; providing a legacy that goes beyond organisational structures to exist whatever service is commissioned in the future for Medway.

We are very pleased to form a partnership with Turning Point. By aligning MARS expertise in substance misuse and recovery alongside our approach to training we can define authentic new opportunities for people facing significant barriers to recovery and employment. With this relationship and the workshops we’ll run together we genuinely believe people will be able to come out the other side, not just intact, but repaired. Not only able to achieve sobriety; but a genuine life purpose too.
